그는 1950년 5월 13일에 Michigan 주의 Saginaw에서 출생하였다.
조산아로 태어났던 그는 인큐베이터 안으로 산소가 과다하게 들어가는 바람에 실명하게 되었다.
그는 아주 일찍부터 음악에 대한 천부적 재능을 보였으며
Motown 레코드사에서 12살짜리 천재로 통했다.
그의 첫 싱글 "Fingertips" 는 8년에 걸쳐 R&B 부문에서 꾸준히 팔려나가는 스테디 셀러였다.
그가 21살이 되었을 때 그는 Motown과 계약을 갱신하면서 곡을 만들뿐 아니라
스스로 제작까지 하는 놀라운 재능을 보였다.
그의 앨범들은 Soul과 R&B부문에서 새로운 지평을 연 것으로 여겨지고 있으며
아직까지 존경받는 음악인으로 활약하고 있다.
