<b>Sarah Vaughan은...</b>
본명이 Sarah Lois Vaughan이며 1924년 미국 New Jersey 주의 Newark출생.
그녀는 비록 음악적인 가정 환경에서 태어나지는 못했으나
노래에 천부적인 소질을 가지고 태어났다.
목수였던 아버지와 세탁소에서 일하던 어머니 사이에서 태어난 그녀는
10년 가까이 피아노 레슨을 받았으며 교회 성가대에서 활동하면서
12세에는 교회의 올갠 주자로 활동하였다.
1942년 그녀는 Harlem의 Apollo극장에서 열린 아마추어 콘테스트에서 상을 타게 되었고
음악에 발을 들여놓는 기회가 열리게 되었다.
큰 밴드였던 Earl "Fatha" Hines에서 파트타임으로 노래하던 Billy Eckstine에게서
주목을 받은 그녀는 1943년 이 밴드에 가수겸 제2 피아노 연주자로 입단하게 되었고
Eckstine은 일년뒤 자기의 밴드를 만들면서 그녀에게 활동무대를 마련해 주었다.
여기에서 그녀는 모던 재즈의 선구자였던 Charlie Parker와 Dizzy Gillespie를 만난다.
1945년 밴드와 취입을 하면서 그녀는 새로운 음악에 대해 기본적인 이해를 쌓아갔다.
이후 그녀는 John Kirby밴드와 잠시 일했으나 곧 자신의 이름을 걸고 활동할 것을 결심한다.
1947년 그녀는 트럼펫주자였던 George Treadwell과 결혼하고 그는 그녀의 매니저가 되었다.
1950년에는 Miles Davis와 공연하는등 활동폭을 넓혀가던 그녀는
1960년대에는 그녀는 이미 스타덤에 올랐지만 재즈가수로서의 활동은
1970년대에 들어서서 조금씩 줄어갔고
1980년에 카네기 홀에서 콘서트를 열었고 Apollo에 돌아와 Eckstine과 노래하는 쇼가
NBC-TV로 방송되었다.
1987년 그녀는 라틴곡조의 앨범을 내놓았고 다른 TV쇼에도 출연했다.
Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Dizzy Gillespie, Don Cherry, Maynard Ferguson,
Chuck Mangione등 많은 뮤지션들과 호흡을 맞추기도 했던 그녀는 1990년 4월 3일
미국 California 주의 Los Angeles에서 폐암으로 사망했다.
